Zachary La Fratta selected for Hamilton Relay 2011 Better Hearing and Speech Month Recognition Award for the District of Columbia

May, 01 2011

Zachary La Fratta is known within the Washington, D.C. community and within the campus of Gallaudet University for his numerous contributions to professional organizations, his strong leadership abilities and superb communication skills. His ability to maintain a high level of academic success by pursuing a full time, Doctorate of Audiology degree, while taking on other professional endeavors is quite impressive.

Zachary has taken on the positions of Humanitarian Chair for the Student Academy of Audiology Chapter, Gallaudet University and President of the D.C. Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA). He also participates in numerous professional development/continuing education activities and professional presentations, panels and media opportunities. He has assisted in creating awareness for open captioned films through DEAF-inite Entertainment, an outreach and fundraising event, and is involved in HLAA's Walk4Hearing functions as well as with Hearing Loss Nation – a non-profit online community designed specifically for individuals between the ages of 18-35 who are hard of hearing.

Recently, Zachary traveled to Mexico for a week long humanitarian trip with six other students in the Audiology program and three supervisors. The mission of this trip, largely led by Zachary's efforts, was to meet the needs of the residents with hearing loss through training, outreach and hearing aid fittings. The trip was a huge success and Zachary brought a high level of professional, interpersonal and organizational skills to the team's effort in serving these individuals.

The District of Columbia is fortunate to have such a role model and we congratulate Zachary for his leadership and accomplishments.
