Thyra Heger is hard working and dedicated to eliminating the communication barriers that individuals with hearing loss face. Throughout New Mexico, she has made a great impact on the lives of individuals with hearing loss and is sensitive to the fact that each person has their own unique needs. She uses her expertise and knowledge to assist those who seek her help and is loyal to providing them with the best resources available.
Thyra came out of retirement to work for the New Mexico Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons (NMCDHH). Having previously worked as an Audiologist, she has been a wonderful asset to NMCDHH and to individuals with hearing loss. She has exposed the southern region of New Mexico to the services available through NMCDHH and has increased awareness by educating businesses on how to be more accessible to individuals with hearing loss. She has developed a strong relationship and trust among individuals, businesses, and agencies throughout southern New Mexico.
For many years, there had been a great need for implementing a local Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) chapter in New Mexico. To help fill this need, Thyra became involved and was instrumental in helping to establish an HLAA chapter in Las Cruces. The membership of this chapter continues to grow, and because of the success this chapter has shown, Thyra is now involved in helping set up an additional HLAA chapter in Roswell.
People are drawn to Thyra's warm personality and she is known to carry out her obligations with vigor and resolve. She has demonstrated a high degree of loyalty to her work and is always willing to go the extra mile. We congratulate Thyra for her accomplishments and are pleased to honor her with the Hamilton Relay 2011 Better Hearing and Speech Month Recognition Award.
