Shirley Hampton selected for Hamilton Relay 2017 Deaf Community Leader Award for the State of Iowa

Shirley Hampton of Davenport, Iowa has been selected as the Hamilton Relay Deaf Community Leader Award recipient for the state of Iowa. Shirley is an influential icon within Iowa’s Deaf community while always emphasizing her passion regarding advocacy regarding the importance of qualified interpreting services.

Leadership is evident in Shirley’s involvement in various organizations where she not only is a member, but manages several leadership roles. Some of these include the Iowa Association of the Deaf (IAD), Dual Party Relay Council Member, Deaf Services Commission of Iowa and Iowa Deaf Senior Citizens.

Shirley is also a member of Iowa State Registry Interpreters for the Deaf (ISRID) and strives to increase the number of American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters throughout the state. She is also the chairperson for a special committee that works on Iowa Sign Language Interpreter Licensing laws. Her involvement with ISRID and her leadership role in IAD, she works to provide equal access in hospitals.

In addition to her volunteer work, she has been an ASL instructor at Scott Community College and a certified deaf student mentor at local schools in her area.
