Sarah YoungBear-Brown of Tama, Iowa has been selected as the Hamilton Relay Deaf Community Leader Award recipient for the state of Iowa. Sarah is an influential member of her community and works to bring awareness to the Deaf Native American community.
Sarah is a member of the Meskwaki Nation and is active in both the Meskwaki community and the Deaf community. As part of her goal to connect the two communities, she founded Gathering of Deafatives, which was created to link members of the Deaf Native American community. The goal of Gathering of Deafatives is to connect Native Americans who are deaf from across the country to each other.
In addition, Sarah presented at World Deaf Expo in Las Vegas about the various parts of Native American culture. She is a strong advocate and is passionate about sharing her culture with those around her.
Earlier this year, she was recognized and honored by the Deaf Women United during Deaf Women History Month. She was one of thirty-one women who were recognized for making a difference in the Deaf community.
