Pearlie Kemp-Murphy of Ellenwood, Georgia has been selected as the recipient of the Hamilton Relay 2018 Deaf Community Leader Award for the state of Georgia. Pearlie is described by her peers as a compassionate leader who advocates for the Deaf community.
Pearlie is currently the treasurer of Atlanta Black Deaf Advocates (ABDA) and an active member of National Alliance of Black Interpreters (NAOBI) – Atlanta. She also gives many hours of volunteer time to students at the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf (AASD) where she assists with their Black History program. Pearlie’s dedication to students also lead her to sit on a panel at Georgia State University where she taught students about jobs and education.
Pearlie’s advocacy for the Deaf community also extends to supporting interpreters in the Atlanta area. She supports community American Sign Language (ASL) classes at the Georgia Center of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (GCDHH) and volunteers at Kaiser as a Deaf Interpreter. In addition, Pearlie facilitates workshops for the development of interpreters.
