In honor of National Deaf Awareness Week, Hamilton Relay is pleased to recognize Lena Greene as the 2009 Deaf/Hard of Hearing Leader for the State of Rhode Island.
Lena Greene is an outstanding leader and role model and is a strong advocate for children who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
Lena strives to be certain that all children who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing have the appropriate services available to them. In her current role as Coordinator of the Family Guidance and Early Childhood Programs at the Rhode Island School for the Deaf, she works to provide a wide range of services to families with children under three years of age who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Services provided include parent education, support groups, communication therapy and assessment, audio logical management, sign language classes and preschool transition.
Lena has participated on the State of Rhode Island's Early Hearing Detection Intervention (EHDI) Committee. She established a children's play group so that children and their parents could interact with others alike and recognize that they are not alone. Lena has also served as a member of several committees for the Rhode Island Hearing Assessment Program including the advisory committee, program follow-up committee and program seminar committee. She has presented at seminars and events in relation to early intervention with a goal of educating and improving opportunities for children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and their families.
As stated by a community member, Lena has tireless energy in working with families who have children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. She puts the needs of her community before her own, knowing that it is much needed.
We congratulate Lena on her many accomplishments and are pleased to recognize her for her dedication and service to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities throughout Rhode Island.
