Lee Nettles of Westfield, Massachusetts has been selected as the Hamilton Relay Deaf Community Leader Award recipient for the state of Massachusetts. Lee has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing. He is held in high regard by his peers for his commitment to the community over the years and his exemplary character.
Since 2012, Lee has been a member of Helping Educate to Advance the Rights of the Deaf (HEARD) where he focuses on correcting and preventing wrongful convictions of individuals who are deaf, ending deaf prisoner abuse, decreasing recidivism rates for returned citizens who are deaf and increasing representation of the Deaf community in the justice, legal and corrections professions.
Additionally, Lee serves on the Mass Assistive Technology Program (MATP) advisory council where he promotes different ideas and concepts on assistive technology to meet the needs of various disabilities. Lee is also on the Legislative Task Force at the Mass Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. As part of his involvement, he meets with statewide Deaf advocates to review state and federal pending legislation to determine whether or not the legislation will have harmful effects on the Deaf and hard of hearing community.
Lee also devotes his time to many other organizations, including the Willie Ross School for the Deaf, Baystate Deaf Senior Citizens, the Western Mass Association of the Deaf and Hearing-Impaired and the National Association of the Deaf.
Along with his peers, we commend Lee for his dedication and accomplishments as an advocate for the Deaf community and are proud to present him with the Hamilton Relay 2016 Deaf Community Leader Award for the state of Massachusetts.
