Jana Spoor selected for Hamilton Relay 2014 Deaf Community Leader Award for the State of Nevada

Jana Spoor has been selected as the recipient of the Hamilton Relay 2014 Deaf Community Lead Award for the state of Nevada. Jana is a tireless advocate for individuals who are deaf and has volunteered and devoted many hours of her time to helping those around her.

Jana is the current chair of the Nevada Association of the Deaf (NVAD) board and previously served as vice chair and board member. She is also currently serving as president of the board of directors for the Nevada Disability Advocacy and Law Center (NDALC) where she works to protect and advocate for the human and legal rights, interests and welfare of individuals who have disabilities. Jana is very active with the Communication Access Council (CAC) which provides communication equipment, services and advocacy to individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. She was a member of CAC’s fundraising committee which raised money to sponsor Camp SignShine, a week-long camp for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. In addition, she is the current chair of the board for the Nevada Association of the Deaf and is a board member for the Northern Nevada Center for Independent Living.

Jana is very active in improving education for students with disabilities in the Washoe County School District. She is a member of the Special Education Advisory Team (SEAT) and provides direction to the Special Education Directory and District Legislative personnel in regards to the educational needs of student with disabilities. In addition to her advocacy for improved education, Jana has testified in front of the State of Nevada Assembly and Senate supporting newborn hearing legislation and pushing for improved and expanded services for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.

There is no better word than advocate to describe Jana; she is truly dedicated to improving the lives of every member of her community. We commend Jana for her contributions and leadership and are proud to present her with the Hamilton Relay 2014 Deaf Community Leader Award for the state of Nevada.
