Doug Roberts is a strong advocate for individuals with hearing loss. His friendly demeanor and leadership skills have been a great asset to his community. He has been actively involved in the deaf and hard of hearing community for over 20 years and has assisted in enhancing access to communication for all.
Doug enjoys sharing his experience with hearing loss and openly offers support and provides references to others. He was elected as President for the local Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) chapter, formerly Self Help for Hard of Hearing People (SHHH), in Utah and is currently in his second term. He has succeeded in creating a website and arranging an email group for HLAA where he posts helpful information and distributes notifications on a monthly basis. Doug is also a member of the Utah Communication Access Network, formerly known as the Popcorn Coalition which is comprised of 5 groups; AG Bell, Utah Association for the Deaf (UAD), Cued Utah, Association of Late Deafened Adults (ALDA), and HLAA. The group's mission is to help deaf and hard of hearing individuals become advocates for each other, to work together in obtaining captioning within a variety of venues, and to address other accessibility needs. He has served on the Advisory Council to the Utah Division of Services of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and is currently the web site administrator for Salt Lake Walk4Hearing.
In 2005, Utah was host to the ALDA conference in Salt Lake City, Doug worked to seek out possible sites where people would want to visit, initiated contacts and guided other members in pre-planning activities. Doug was in charge of setting up the assistive listening technology and worked closely with the venue to set up speakers and microphones that would be compatible with the receivers. Additionally, Doug has done a tremendous amount of outreach and has put forth effort in working with others to recommend and provide assistive listening technology in a variety of buildings in his area.
Doug is a retired electrical engineer and has been described by his peers as motivated and high spirited. After successfully receiving cochlear implants nine years ago, he became a great advocate and is very encouraging to others who may be looking into receiving cochlear implants themselves. We are pleased to recognize and share Doug's accomplishments within the State of Utah and commend him for his efforts.
