Hamilton Relay is pleased to recognize Elaine Glennon as the 2010 Deaf Community Leader for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

October, 28 2010

Elaine Glennon has been described as a "legend." Throughout her 25-year teaching career at Northern Essex Community College (NECC) in Haverhill, Massachusetts, Elaine has shown her dedication and commitment to improving literacy for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Over the years, Elaine's energy has been directed toward her family and her "extended family," which includes the hundreds of individuals who have enrolled in NECC's English Language Cluster Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students. The program provides a unique opportunity for adult students who are deaf or hard of hearing to improve their English language reading and writing skills in order to transition to college-level coursework, build vital skills for pursuing employment opportunities as well as enrich their lives through better communication.

Elaine is an extraordinary and inspiring role model and motivator for her students as she can identify with their culture, customs, and challenges. Even more, she is an inspiring role model for her colleagues who say she is patient and kind, yet clearly challenges her students to the maximum extent possible. She has faith that they can succeed and sets high standards for them.

Recently, Elaine retired from NECC as a Full Professor with Tenure. She was the first individual who is Deaf to receive this distinction in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. As a member of NECC's faculty, she was an ever-present model for commitment to student learning and success; a constant reminder that complete devotion to the craft of teaching finds its rewards in changing lives for the better.

Elaine has been recognized by her colleagues and the community with several awards over the years, a few of which include:

  • Commonwealth Citation for Outstanding Performance - 1990

  • Massachusetts State Association of the Deaf (MSAD) - Dr. Richard Thompson Lifetime Achievement Award - 1999

  • Haverhill YWCA Woman of the Year - 2003

  • Her integrity, strong rapport with students, and commitment to education have earned Elaine tremendous respect and appreciation from students and colleagues alike. Improving the lives of those around her has been her lifelong mission. We are pleased to recognize Elaine for her leadership and wide-spread positive influence in the Deaf Community of Massachusetts.

This leadership recognition has been brought to you by Hamilton Relay.
