Barbara Abineri selected for Hamilton Relay 2015 Better Hearing and Speech Month Recognition Award for the State of Massachusetts

Barbara Abineri of Brookline has been selected as the recipient of the Hamilton Relay 2015 Better Hearing and Speech Month Recognition Award for the state of Massachusetts. Barbara is a passionate advocate and encouraging mentor to individuals with hearing loss.

In 2010, Barbara formed the Greater New England Chapter of the Advanced Bionic Ear Association which currently has more than 40 regular attendees. She serves as a mentor to cochlear implant (CI) candidates by guiding them through the implant process. Barbara also sits on the Gift of Hearing Foundation Board of Directors where she vets CI candidates who have applied for financial assistance as well assists in fundraising efforts and strategic planning.

Barbara is an active member of the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) Boston chapter and is on the planning committee for the New England Walk4Hearing. She is currently the membership chair of the Minuteman Implant Club as well as the chair of Exhibitor Registration for the 2015 New England CI Convention (NECI). Barbara is also an active member of the Boston chapter of the Association of Late-Deafened Adults (ALDA).

In addition to her involvement in the Hard of Hearing Community, Barbara served on the Board of Directors for Rosie’s Place, a Boston shelter for poor and homeless women. She currently serves on the Kip Tiernan Social Justice Fellowship Committee which selects a grant recipient who will develop and implement a special project that will improve the lives of women who are poor or homeless.

Barbara is an asset to the community as well as to the multiple organizations in which she serves, and is truly appreciated and valued by her peers. We commend Barbara for her dedication and are proud to present her with the Hamilton Relay 2015 Better Hearing and Speech Month Recognition Award.
