Amy Lucero has been an integral part of New Mexico’s Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Hispanic Deaf communities since she came back home after graduating from Rochester Institute of Technology. It’s because of her work in these communities that she was honored with the Hamilton Relay 2017 Deaf Community Leader Award for the State of New Mexico.
Amy served as secretary for the New Mexico Association of the Deaf (NMAD), during which time she was called a “de facto leader” by former NMAD President Johnny Robertson. As of September 23, 2017, Amy is the President of NMAD.
She has represented the organization at the National Association of the Deaf Conference (NAD) in Phoenix, and will attend the National Leadership Training Conference in Oklahoma City in October. Amy is so dedicated to being involved and becoming a leader that she has been willing to pay her own way to these events. She is also involved with the New Mexico School for the Deaf Alumni Association (NMSD), serving as the chairperson in planning for the 2020 NMSD reunion.
In January of 2017, the NAD Board visited Albuquerque to conduct a meeting. Amy worked hard to arrange logistics to provide a comfortable experience for members of the Board, even contributing some of her delicious homemade cooking.
Amy is a rising star in the Deaf and Hispanic Deaf communities. She is open-minded, listens to the needs of her communities, has a good heart, and has displayed exemplary leadership qualities that will benefit her communities for years to come.
