November, 21 2013

Richard Fraychinaud is a dedicated advocate of equal access and opportunities for individuals in the deaf community and has been involved in numerous positive community endeavors.

Richard worked as a postal clerk at the New Orleans post office for 36 years until he retired in 2005. He has served numerous organizations and agencies as a leader and volunteer. Richard served as the treasurer for the Louisiana Association of the Deaf (LAD) and as a committee member for the LAD Pageant Committee. He has also served the Westbank Deaf Club for many years in various roles. He has chaired multiple community events for the Deaf, some of which include crawfish boils, bowling tournaments and OctoberFest. He currently serves as a member and official of the Louisiana School for the Deaf Alumni Association, a member of the Catholic Deaf Center of New Orleans and the International Catholic Deaf Association.

One of Richard’s most notable contributions has been his leadership as the chair of the Annual Krewe of Dauphine Deaf Mardi Gras Ball. His involvement includes arranging the location, selling tickets, decorating the stage, designing costumes and sewing costumes. He has a well-known talent for artistic productions and he utilizes those skills to make each and every ball unique. Each year Richard selects individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing to be members of the Royal Mardi Gras Court for the ball.

He is an inspiration, motivating the deaf community of New Orleans to continue giving of their time and support to the community. Richard has been described by his peers as a caring and devoted leader who is willing to take on any task that comes his way.

We commend Richard Fraychinaud for the difference he is making in the lives of individuals who are deaf and we are pleased to honor the work that he is doing with the Hamilton Relay 2013 Deaf Community Leader Award for the State of Louisiana.
