Rafael Davis selected for Hamilton Relay 2020 Better Hearing and Speech Month Recognition Award for the State of California

Rafael Davis, a current 8th grade student at Claremont Middle School in Oakland, California has been selected for the Hamilton Relay 2020 Better Hearing and Speech Month Recognition Award. He is being recognized for his outstanding leadership and public service. Rafael may be a young individual, but this has not stopped him from becoming a positive influence amongst his peers. Below are a few of his contributions to the community:

  • Community Service Projects:
    • Co-led a bake sale to raise funds for food and housing for the homeless and raised over $450, donating it to the Berkeley Food & Housing Project
    • Spent multiple afternoon’s cleaning litter out of Lake Merritt to help protect wildlife from ingesting plastic trash
  • Advocacy:
    • Prepared and delivered a speech for congregation in which he spoke about discrimination against people with disabilities and why more work is needed to make society more inclusive
  • Volunteerism:
    • Captain of the safety patrol at Manzanita Seed Elementary in 5th grade
      • Received Honorable Mention for the “Bay Area Safety Patroller of the Year” award – Mayor Schaaf presented him a plaque at the annual citywide Safety Patrol ceremony
    • One of the current judges at the weekly Magic Draft Tournaments at “It's Your Move Games” in Oakland every Friday night
