Jessica Renner of Kent, Washington has been selected as the Hamilton Relay 2017 Better Hearing and Speech Month Recognition Award recipient for the state of Washington. Jessica’s peers describe her as an incredible role model for young people with disabilities.
Jessica currently serves as an Advisory Board member for the Developmental Disabilities Advisory Board Legislative Committee and is a member of Self Advocates in Leadership (SAIL). She previously served as a governor-appointed council member for the Washington State Developmental Disabilities Council, a member of Agency Council for Coordinated Transportation and an advocate at The Arc of King County. Jessica has also volunteered at the Seattle Aquarium and the Pacific Science Center.
As a public speaker, Jessica volunteered to speak to a group of young augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) users and their families to share her challenges and successes in using a device to communicate. She uses her direct experiences as a person with a disability to advocate for rights in employment, equal pay and an inclusive life in the community, including accessible transportation and community activities.
Jessica is currently a full-time student at Renton Technical College studying Design Engineering Technology.
We commend Jessica for her passion and enthusiasm and are proud to present her with the Hamilton Relay 2017 Better Hearing and Speech Month Recognition Award for the state of Washington.
