Brian Drake of Chattanooga, Tennessee, has been selected as the Hamilton Relay 2016 Better Hearing and Speech Month Recognition Award recipient for the state of Tennessee. Brian’s peers describe him as a selfless and caring person who is always working toward making connections in his community. Brian suffered a stroke 10 years ago which caused damage to his hearing and ability to speak.
After his stroke, Brian decided to learn American Sign Language (ASL) and become involved in the community. He is the coordinator of the Happy Hands meetings and a leader of Deaf Chat Café activities held in Chattanooga and the surrounding area. He is also a long-time supporter of providing sign language interpreting and captioning services at Tennessee and Georgia theater performances.
In addition, Brian is an active member of the Chattanooga chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) and is quick to volunteer for many of the chapter’s events. For the past six years, he has volunteered for the Walk4Hearing, which is one of the chapter’s biggest events.
Brian is strongly committed to improving the lives of individuals who are hard of hearing in the Chattanooga community. We commend Brian for his leadership and positive attitude and proud to present him with the Hamilton Relay 2016 Better Hearing and Speech Month Recognition Award for the state of Tennessee.
