VCO users speak directly to the person being called and, through specialized equipment, read what is spoken by the other party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/hamiltonrelay.com\/customer-profile.html\">Create a Customer Profile<\/a>&nbsp;so that every call through Relay is immediately connected and processed in VCO mode.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:250px\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hamiltonrelay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/icon-vco-voice-carry-over.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-149\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group bannerheader\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column wrap is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Placing Calls<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading wrap has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d08fa01b1e76d3fd66505c2a69dfd4ab\" style=\"color:#003399\">Placing VCO Calls Using a TTY<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list workslist wrap\">\n<li>Using your TTY, dial 711 or the toll-free number for your state.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After the Communication Assistant (CA) answers and identifies Relay, type \u201cVCO PLS GA.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wait for the CA to type, \u201cVCO ON GA\u201d indicating that Voice Carry Over has been activated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pick up the handset and speak to the CA providing the number of the person you wish to call, and any additional instructions. Say \u201cGA\u201d or \u201cGo Ahead\u201d and immediately place the handset back onto the TTY.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The CA will ask the person you are calling if he\/she is familiar with Voice Carry Over. If the person is not, the CA will explain how VCO works before the conversation begins.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The CA types the response of the other person for you to read on your TTY screen. When you see \u201cGA,\u201d it is your turn to respond by picking up the handset and speaking to the other person.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When you are ready for the other person to respond, say \u201cGA\u201d and place the handset back on the TTY. Turn-taking continues in this manner until the call is complete.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover is-light thintopbottomgreyborder animated slideleft\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-background-dim-0 has-background-dim\"><\/span><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-cover-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column wrap is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-abbbccf31d3519923ee6b586a02e31f1\" style=\"color:#003399\">Placing VCO Calls Using a VCO Device (Ameriphone or Uniphone)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list workslist\">\n<li>Connect to Relay by dialing 711 or the toll-free number for your state.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When the CA answers, simply press the \u201cRLY MSG\u201d button that sends a recorded VCO prompt.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After the CA answers with \u201cVCO ON GA,\u201d provide the number you wish to call and then say \u201cGA.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If necessary, the CA will explain how VCO works to the person you are calling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When the conversation is ready to begin, speak directly to the person you are calling and say \u201cGA\u201d when you are ready for a response. Turn-taking continues in this manner until the call is complete.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading wrap has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-fa44c0f6dda79bd497bffa68134e4b0a\" style=\"color:#003399\">Placing Calls with 2-Line VCO<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wrap\"><em>Requires the use of two telephone lines, one of which must have 3-way conferencing capabilities.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list workslist wrap\">\n<li>Using your TTY, dial 711 or the toll-free number for your state.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When the CA answers the call, inform the CA that this will be a 2-Line VCO call. You may do so by either speaking to the CA or typing \u201c2LVCO PLS GA.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instruct the CA to dial your voice telephone number.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The CA will dial your voice number and type back: \u201cDialing XXX-XXX-XXXX, Ring 1, 2&#8230;.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Answer your voice line with your voice. Ask if the CA can hear you. The CA will type back a response.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask the CA to hold while you use your voice phone to create a conference call and dial the number of the person you wish to call.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Immediately connect the conference using the \u201chold,\u201d \u201cswitch hook,\u201d \u201cflash,\u201d \u201cconference\u201d or \u201clink\u201d button found on your phone. The term used for conferencing calls may vary according to your telephone company\u2019s features and procedures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When the other party answers, the CA will not identify or explain Relay \u2013 the CA is present only to type what\u2019s said by the other party.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Throughout the call, speak directly to the other party \u2013 there is no need for either of you to say \u201cGo Ahead\u201d or \u201cGA\u201d as Relay and the CA will be \u201cinvisible.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group bannerheader\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column wrap is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Receiving Calls<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading wrap has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-48b31ee63e1c6941b4332ff6341d1cf8\" style=\"color:#003399\">Receiving Calls with VCO<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wrap\">It is best to establish a Customer Profile indicating you are a VCO user so the CA can connect your calls immediately.
