Sheryl Whitehead of Reno has been selected as the recipient of the Hamilton Relay 2015 Better Hearing and Speech Month Recognition Award for the state of Nevada. She is a tireless advocate for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, devoting many hours of her own time to helping those around her.
For the past 11 years, Sheryl has been a teacher for students who are deaf and hard of hearing at Wooster High School in Reno. She also works closely with juniors and seniors attending the Close-Up Program in Washington, DC by organizing fundraising efforts that include concession stand sales, pancake breakfasts and other activities. Sheryl volunteers to teach American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf culture to her fellow teachers and staff and is in the process of establishing an ASL Club for faculty. At Camp SignShine and the Communication Arts Camp, Sheryl participates by working with the students who attend and is involved in fundraising for both events as well.
In addition to sharing her knowledge with students, Sheryl is a member of Nevada Hands & Voices where she serves as a mentor and supports parents with children who are deaf or hard of hearing. She also taught ASL classes to parents at the Deaf & Hard of Hearing Advocacy Resource Center. At the University of Nevada, Reno, she taught ASL classes to students in the Upward Bound program which offers college preparatory services to qualifying high school students.
