In honor of National Deaf Awareness Week, Hamilton Relay is pleased to recognize Jonathan Connick as the 2009 Deaf/Hard of Hearing leader for the State of Maine.
Jonathan Connick is a leader in his community and is committed to making a difference in the lives of others. As the former Executive Director of the Maine Center on Deafness (MCD), which he headed for ten years, Jonathan expanded the agency by establishing various services statewide to benefit individuals in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities as well as students of the School for the Deaf in Maine.
After he left MCD, Jonathan founded his own consulting business and is under contract with a number of agencies and businesses. He currently serves on several boards, including the board of the Maine Center on Deafness. He also serves as Vice President of the State's Division for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Late Deafened, which formerly was known as the Maine Division of Deafness.
Jonathan teaches American Sign Language classes at various locations including the University of Southern Maine, agencies that serve clients who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing with mental illness and mental retardation, and employers that have employees who are Deaf. Jonathan also helps to educate the cadets at the Maine State Police Academy about deafness and hearing loss as part of their training before becoming full-fledged officers of the law.
Jonathan's professionalism, commitment and follow-through in serving others has and continues to make a positive impact in the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Late Deafened communities in Maine.
