Michelle Ames selected for Hamilton Relay 2014 Deaf Community Leader Award for the State of Maine

Michelle Ames of South Portland, Maine has been selected as the recipient of the Hamilton Relay 2014 Deaf Community Leader Award for the state of Maine. Michelle is committed to playing an active role in advocating for and empowering individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Michelle lends her talents to a number of different organizations, including the Maine Association of the Deaf, Camp Sign-A-Watha and the Portland Disability Advisory Committee. She is an active member of Deaf Women of Maine where she served as co-host of their ASL Showcase and helped organize a fundraising clothing swap.

Michelle is also a supporter of the creative arts. She is a regular participant of the 1st Friday Art Walk in Portland and is a volunteer interpreter for the Women in Harmony Concerts. She has served on the committee for the Annual Maine Deaf Film Festival held at the University of Southern Maine. Michelle also serves as a Deaf Consultant for local theatre productions.

Described by her peers as a “bright ray of sunshine,” Michelle is generous with her time and talents and is an excellent role model. We commend Michelle for the positive impact she has made in the lives of others and are proud to present her with the Hamilton Relay 2014 Deaf Community Leader Award for the state of Maine.
