October, 06 2018

Phil Schnackel of Council Bluffs, Iowa has been selected as the Hamilton Relay 2018 Deaf Community Leader Award recipient for the state of Iowa. Phil is an active advocate within the western Iowa Deaf community and demonstrates loyalty through his leadership with the Council Bluffs Silent Club.

Phil has been involved with the Council Bluffs Silent Club since 1975. He has served as president for the past six years. When there are regional or statewide events in western Iowa, Phil is there to help.

Recruiting younger members to the Council Bluffs Silent Club is something that Phil has accomplished throughout the years. Inclusiveness is part of his leadership, and he encourages people who are deaf and hearing of all ages to join the Club meetings.

In addition to his work with the Silent Club, Phil assists with Iowa School for the Deaf Homecoming activities and has volunteered when there are Iowa Association for the Deaf meetings or events in Council Bluffs.

We commend Phil for his advocacy and are proud to present him with the Hamilton Relay 2018 Deaf Community Leader Award for the state of Iowa.
