Martha Meyer resides in rural Pleasant Hill, Iowa and is a native of Waterloo, Iowa. She graduated from Waterloo Central High, and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy from Iowa State. She is a dedicated member of the Hearing Loss Association of Central Iowa (HLA-CI) and is passionate about advocating for the rights of individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Martha experiences progressive sensory-neural hearing loss, which is an inherited family trait, and was fitted with her first hearing aid at the age of 17. She went on to work for a company where she has primarily provided computer support for their research department for the past 28 years. Martha was successful in raising awareness to her employer about hearing loss-related issues. She stressed the importance of having assistive communication devices, emergency broadcast alerts, and captioned training videos available in the workplace. She promotes the use of tools such as web cams, captioned telephone service, and volume control phones for co-workers who have difficulty hearing over the telephone.
Martha's involvement with HLA-CI includes publishing their Newsletter, fundraising, assisting the program committee, carrying out advocacy projects to help others with hearing loss, and attending regional and national events when possible. She has been described by others as conscientious, generous and kind, and has proven to be a remarkable team player in all activities in which she involves herself.
Additionally, Martha enjoys being active in her church and assisting her husband in his beekeeping operation. She takes pleasure in watching her daughter play volleyball and attending her son's symphonic band concerts. We are pleased to recognize Martha and commend her for the efforts and accomplishments in Iowa.
