National Deaf Awareness Week: David (Jerry) Wilding recognized as the 2009 Deaf/Hard of Hearing leader for the State of Idaho

December, 23 2009

In honor of National Deaf Awareness Week, Hamilton Relay is pleased to recognize David (Jerry) Wilding as the 2009 Deaf/Hard of Hearing leader for the State of Idaho.

David "Jerry" Wilding is a person who takes great pride in being deaf and who is committed to serving the Deaf Community. He has impacted the lives of many deaf and hard of hearing individuals through his passion for sports and has been a positive influence on students who are fortunate to have had him as a teacher and as a coach.

Jerry was a long time science teacher and track coach for the Idaho School for the Deaf and Blind (ISDB) and was a strong advocate of using sports as a tool for developing character in those with which he worked. He continually recruited students into track and field, regardless of the student's athletic ability. Jerry strongly believed that a person would have better chances of succeeding in life if he/she were involved in sports.

Jerry was a champion in his coaching; he was the Assistant Coach of Track and Field, the Head Coach of Track and Field for the 1989 Deaf Olympics and was inducted into the USA Deaf Sports Federation Hall of Fame for his accomplishments. In addition, Jerry served as President of the Idaho Association for the Deaf, Museum Curator at ISDB, and delegate to the National Association for the Deaf convention. Jerry is also a member of the Gallaudet University Alumni Association.

The accomplishments mentioned above are just a few of many ways in which Jerry has been a positive influence within his community. He is a dedicated and professional individual whose efforts and interaction with the students and individuals with which he works in the State of Idaho are truly commendable.
