Erik Nordlof selected for Hamilton Relay 2016 Better Hearing and Speech Month Recognition Award for the District of Columbia

June, 29 2016

Erik Nordlof of Arlington, Virginia has been selected as the Hamilton Relay 2016 Better Hearing and Speech Month Recognition Award recipient for the District of Columbia. Erik is described by his peers as a strong leader and advocate for the community.

Erik has dedicated his time to coordinating open captioned screenings at movie theaters in Washington, DC and Northern Virginia, as well as independent theaters in Washington, DC and Maryland. As part of his efforts, Erik created the Facebook group “DC Deaf Moviegoers” and email list where over 700 moviegoers who are deaf or hard of hearing can find updated information about open captioned movie screenings in their neighborhood.

In order to spread the word on this initiative, Erik works with Gallaudet University’s Public Relations Office to provide weekly notifications with times and locations of open captioned movies. He also invites families from Kendall Elementary School, Maryland School for the Deaf and Arlington Public Schools to open captioned screenings of family movies.

In addition to his tireless efforts in the community, Erik contributes to the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) - DC Chapter, the National Association of the Deaf and the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell).

We commend Erik for his passion for bettering accessibility in his community and are proud to present him with the Hamilton Relay 2016 Better Hearing and Speech Month Recognition Award for the District of Columbia.

In honor of the awardee, Hamilton hosted an award ceremony and reception at the Public Service Commission of the District of Columbia on Wednesday, June 29, 2016. This leadership recognition has been brought to you by Hamilton Relay.
