Patricia Warmack is well known in Northwestern Louisiana for her strong leadership and advocacy for individuals who are deaf. She is a graduate of the Arkansas School for the Deaf and has been a federal employee of the U.S. Government Department of Housing and Urban Development for 33 years.
For more than 35 years, Patricia has been a member of the Shreveport Deaf Action Center. She was the first Deaf Board member and currently serves as President of the Board. She has extensive knowledge of Deaf Culture and is a role model to the many people she encounters. She has taught sign language for many years and participates in interpreter training programs among other programs offered through the Deaf Action Center. She has also served on a variety of government boards and committees in Shreveport through the years.
In 2010, Patricia retired from the federal government and keeps busy by serving wherever she can in the community. She is President of the Louisiana Baptist Conference for the Deaf where she teaches Sunday school and delivers goodwill gifts to individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing who are in nursing homes and hospitals.
"Patty," as her friends and co-workers know her best, volunteers her time to educate and instruct individuals who are deaf on how to live an independent, full life. She leads by example and encourages others to set goals for themselves and achieve them. Additionally, she takes time to ensure that businesses and organizations know about the rights of individuals who experience hearing loss so that they can arrange the appropriate accommodations for effective communication.
Patricia continues to be a leader within the Deaf Community of Northwestern Louisiana and we are pleased to present her with the Hamilton Relay 2011 Deaf Community Leader Award.
