Cathy Zimmerman of Perryopolis, Pennsylvania has been selected as the Hamilton Relay 2016 Better Hearing Speech Month Recognition Award recipient for the state of Pennsylvania. She is a committed advocate for the hard of hearing community and has been described by her peers as someone who is always approachable and welcoming.
In 2009, Cathy founded Hear Fayette through the Society of St. Vincent De Paul (SVdP) Uniontown Area Conference. She secured a grant to start Hear Fayette which is a program that educates the community and supports those who have difficulty hearing. Hear Fayette serves as a volunteer center for Pennsylvania Initiative on Assistive Technology (PIAT) and helps people with hearing loss find the technology that best suits their needs.
In addition, Cathy writes the Hear Fayette newsletter and provides community outreach designed to raise public awareness about hearing loss. In 2012, she and other volunteers developed the SVdP Hear Fayette Highway Hearing Safety Project, which includes visor cards that advise law enforcement that the driver has hearing loss or is unable to hear.
In addition to her extensive volunteer work with Hear Fayette, Cathy is a board member for the Fayette County Human Service Council and an advisory board member for the Southwest Pennsylvania Agency on Aging.
