James Battat selected for Hamilton Relay 2011 Better Hearing and Speech Month Recognition Award for the State of Massachusetts

May, 19 2011

James Battat is an enthusiastic and talented individual whose leadership in Massachusetts has built esteem and camaraderie among the hard of hearing community. James' advocacy efforts and skill in facilitating activities and events have brought individuals with hearing loss together in order to learn from and support one another.

In 2009, James co-founded the Boston Young Adults chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA), known as Hear@Boston. Since its inception, the group has attracted a wide range of individuals with hearing loss. The Hear@Boston community meets every month and conducts a variety of educational and social gatherings throughout the Boston metro area. The chapter members are great advocates for the rights of individuals with hearing loss and their mission is to empower through social engagement, education and skill development.

For the past several years, James has served on the organizing committee for the HLAA New England Walk4Hearing event. He has been instrumental in encouraging other leaders in the community to become involved. With the increased participation and support, the New England Walk4Hearing will continue to grow and raise awareness each year.

James Battat received his bachelor's degree in Physics from Brown University in 2001, where he was inspired to pursue astrophysics. He then earned his Ph. D. from Harvard University in 2008. James subsequently became a Pappalardo Fellow in the Physics Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was a speaker at the recent 10th Annual Pappalardo Fellowships in Physics Symposium presenting on dark matter particles.

James has been instrumental in educating individuals with hearing loss in Massachusetts. By sharing his personal experience in overcoming and accepting his own hearing loss, he has inspired many. We are pleased to honor James Battat for his contributions and achievements by presenting him with the Hamilton Relay 2011 Better Hearing and Speech Month Recognition Award for the State of Massachusetts.
