Winona Smyth selected for Hamilton Relay 2017 Better Hearing and Speech Month Recognition Award for the State of California

September, 23 2017

Winona “Noni” Smyth of San Luis Obispo, California has been selected at the Hamilton Relay 2017 Better Hearing and Speech Month Recognition Award for the state of California. According to her peers, Noni has made a great impact on the hard of hearing community in her area.

After attending her first Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) conference in 2013, Noni was inspired to start an HLAA chapter in her region. She started to make connections with people in the community and subsequently launched the Central Coast chapter of HLAA. The first official meeting was held in October 2014. Since then she has brought many informative programs to the meeting so that chapter members are aware of all of the different organizations that could benefit them. Some programs that she brought awareness to include emergency preparedness, traveling with hearing loss, making 911 calls and so much more. She has been the chapter’s president since its founding.

In addition to her involvement with HLAA, Noni gives her time to other organizations in her community. She has been a Soroptimist International member since 1999. She also volunteers for the Woods Humane Society and Ambassador Dogs for the Deaf.

Noni was nominated because of her ability to see a need and take action to fulfill that need. Noni has been an inspiration to those around her, and we are proud to present her with the Hamilton Relay 2017 Better Hearing and Speech Month Recognition Award.
